Sid Ahmed Agoumi

Sid Ahmed Agoumi (Arabic: سيد أحمد أقومي)—born Sid Ahmed Méziane on October 5, 1940, in Bologhine (Algiers) and deceased on September 20, 2026, at the age of 86—was an Algerian actor and playwright. A major figure in Algerian theater, cinema, and television, he left his mark on over sixty years of artistic life through his intense presence and understated acting style, becoming one of the most recognizable faces of the Maghreb cultural scene. Born in the Casbah of Algiers, Sid Ahmed Méziane grew up in an environment where popular Algiers culture and French influences intersected. He attended Quranic school followed by a high school in Algiers, where he discovered classical theater and immersed himself in the dramatic speeches that would shape his craft. Drawn to the stage from an early age, he decided to become an actor at fifteen, subsequently honing his skills on stage and in front of the camera throughout the 1960s. His career officially began in the 1960s, a time when Algerian cinema and theater were seeking to assert a distinct identity following independence. Agoumi distinguished himself in both national theater and cinema, bringing equal energy to each discipline. He appeared in over fifty films and numerous television series while remaining committed to the theater, where he played memorable roles in productions such as *Les Enfants de la Casbah*, *Des Roses Rouges Pour Moi*, *Le Cadavre Encerclé*, *Hassan Terro*, and *L’Homme À La Sandale De Caoutchouc*. From 1994 onwards—following the assassination of his friend, the director Abdelkader Alloula—he settled in Paris and pursued a second theatrical career. He performed works by Alloula and Slimane Benaïssa, as well as by Luigi Pirandello, Bernard-Marie Koltès, Matei Vișniec, and David Lescot, thereby establishing an international dimension to his career. Sid Ahmed Agoumi’s best-known roles include appearances in *La Voie* (1968) by Mohamed Slim Riad, *Z* (1969) by Costa-Gavras, *Les Hors-la-loi* (1969, 1976) by Tewfik Farès, *Zone Interdite* (1972) by Ahmed Lallem, *Kahla ou Beida* (1980) by Abderrahmane Bouguermouh, *Le Moulin de Monsieur Fabre* (1984) by Ahmed Rachedi, *Il Était Une Fois Dans L’Oued* (2005), *Les Diseurs De Vérité* (2000) by Karim Traïdia, and the series *Sultan Achour 10* (2015), in which he played the role of Minister Qandil. He received the award for Best Actor for his performance in Karim Traïdia’s *Les Diseurs de Vérité*, a role that garnered critical acclaim for the precision of his acting. Throughout his career, he was frequently cited as a role model by new generations of Algerian actors. Sid Ahmed Agoumi passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the age of 86. His death sparked a wave of tributes across the country. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune described him as a "friend of great stature" and paid tribute to an artist who had "left his mark on more than 50 films and television productions." The National Office of Copyright and Neighboring Rights (ONDA) pays tribute to a "pioneer of Algerian culture," while media outlets and artists describe him as a "giant" of cinema and theater—sometimes nicknamed the "National Django" in reference to his iconic status.
