In 1977, Charles and Ray Eames, hugely influential American designers, released one of the most elegant and creative pieces of science communication of modern times - Powers of Ten. It took the viewers on a journey from a picnic blanket near Lake Michigan to the edge of the known Universe, and back again. Over 40 years later, as a humble homage to this groundbreaking film, Professor Brian Cox takes a similar journey through time and space, explaining how our understanding of the Universe has changed along the way.
The first successful human kidney transplant took place in 1954. But today, the demand for kidneys greatly outstrips availability and as many as 1 in 10 kidney patients in the UK die before getting the transplant they need. Given that healthy people have two kidneys, and generally only need one, should people be compensated for giving a kidney to someone who needs it? In partnership with The Open University, this film explores the ethics of buying and selling kidneys.
