Brave New World

Series in which William Crawley travels to New Zealand's North and South Islands to explore the country's rich connections with Northern Ireland, and to reveal the remarkable stories of the Ulstermen and women - past and present - who have helped build such a powerful relationship.

The episode follows Thomas Braken, an Irishman who wrote the lyrics to the New Zealand National Anthem and then served as a Liberal MP. Then he looks at John Balance, a County Antrim man who was New Zealand's 16th Prime Minister and head of the first Liberal Government. William Massey - another Irishman who became yet another Kiwi PM.

Here Crawley talks about Hannah's shoes - which still operating today. A company formed by a man at the height of the New Zealand gold boom, and a couple who still live on the farmstead their great grandfather first tilled in the late 1800's when he came over from Ulster. Related Videos
